How to Get ChatGPT to Recommend Your Shopify Store: What Our Data Says

Start by finding the buying questions where your store is missing, then improve the information and relevant sources behind those answers. Our data supports looking at product facts, buying guides and the sites an assistant actually reads. It does not establish a trick that guarantees ChatGPT will recommend you.

GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO (answer engine optimization) are names for work on visibility in AI answers. For a merchant, the useful outcome is an accurate recommendation for a relevant buyer, followed by visits and sales you can measure separately.

1. Save a baseline before changing your store

Choose a small set of questions a customer could ask before knowing your brand. Ask about a product need and an important constraint, one buying question at a time. A question that already includes your brand tests something different from discovery.

Follow our guide to checking whether ChatGPT recommends your store. Save the wording, date, country, search setting, answer and source links. Repeat the same questions. Separate a valid answer that omits you from a failed check or a response without verified web search.

Keep these outcomes separate: the store is mentioned; a store page is cited; a product is recommended; someone visits; someone buys. One does not establish the next.

2. Read the sources before choosing the next task

Our report prepared on 5 October 2026 pools 1,443 usable, graded answers that searched the web, across nine product categories. Of these, 1,414 cite at least one site. Among those sourced answers, brand websites appear in 56%, forums in 45% and video in 21%. A single answer can cite several kinds, so these percentages do not add to 100%.

Read each assistant separately. In this snapshot, forums appeared in 15% of ChatGPT's 345 sourced answers and 79% of Perplexity's 392. Video appeared in 1% of those ChatGPT answers and 49% of Gemini's 342. Providers also expose sources differently: some list retrieved pages while others show a narrower cited set. These observations do not establish a universal ranking formula.

The sample contains repeated checks, uneven category coverage and relatively few stores. One category accounts for 37% of all answers. The report is a historical snapshot prepared on 5 October, not 1,443 checks all run that day; its summary does not specify the first and last collection dates. Apply its patterns as starting points, then inspect your own category. Our citation research article explains the wider approach.

3. Make product pages answer the buyer's next question

Write the facts a customer needs to decide: dimensions, materials, compatibility, limitations, stock, delivery and returns. Explain who the product suits and who should choose something else. Make important facts easy to read as text, and keep information consistent between the page and product data.

Use genuine product evidence, clear photographs and helpful comparisons. Check that structured data, the labels software reads about a page, matches the facts shown to customers. This is useful accuracy and search work; our citation observations do not prove that adding one field changes ChatGPT's recommendation.

In the report, a store was more often named when its own site was also cited. That association can run in either direction: an assistant may cite a site after it has already chosen the store. It supports inspecting your pages, not promising that a new link causes a mention.

4. Publish useful buying guides and earn relevant coverage

Among 10,403 cited pages with readable titles, the report classified 30% as best-of lists, 9% as product pages and 8% as forum threads. This measures cited pages, not answers, and excludes Gemini's title-free source records. A headline classifier cannot judge the quality of a guide.

Use that as a reason to inspect the round-ups and comparisons already cited for your buying questions. Check whether your product fits their audience and whether their facts are current. A useful guide explains trade-offs and how products were assessed. If you approach an editor, provide accurate evidence and disclose any commercial relationship. Neither publishing a best-of page nor being added to one guarantees a recommendation.

Your own guide should answer a real decision and explain relevant limits. Avoid filling a blog with near-identical pages that repeat a product name without helping a buyer.

5. Participate honestly where buyers already ask questions

Reddit appeared in 626 sourced answers across eight of the nine categories. That makes relevant discussions worth reading. It does not prove that posting promotional comments increases visibility.

Join only conversations where you can help. Explain the product facts, answer the person's question and disclose that you sell the product when it matters. Follow the community's rules. Do not invent customer experiences, fake reviews or independent endorsements. A useful contribution should stand on its own even if no AI assistant ever cites it.

If video or independent reviews are common in your own source record, give those sources accurate information they can verify. Prioritize the channels your buying questions actually surface rather than copying a pooled percentage.

6. Check suspected blockers without assuming a shortcut

Our review-star survey compared 232 stores in its reported groups. Among stores with visible review widgets, 19 of 103 uncited stores and 11 of 47 cited stores published a machine-readable rating. The difference was not statistically clear. This does not prove reviews are useless, but it does not support promising citations from adding rating labels.

Our robots.txt survey measured 166 Shopify stores on 17 August and found zero citation-relevant blocks for its tested product path. Five blocked training bots only. OpenAI separates training and search crawler controls. Check your actual product path and search access before changing rules; do not remove the whole file because an AI warning appears.

Google says its AI search features do not require special AI text files or extra structured data. Keep ordinary search eligibility and accurate content in order, and ask what a proposed fix will actually change.

7. Repeat the same checks and keep an honest record

Make a manageable change, note when it went live, and compare later answers for the same questions, market and search setting. Repeated answers can vary without a store change. A better week following an edit is useful evidence to investigate, not a controlled proof that the edit caused it.

Keep valid omissions in the record and exclude unusable checks from the recommendation-rate denominator. Assess accuracy and cited sources alongside mentions. Track identifiable referral visits and orders separately, with the understanding that not every AI mention becomes a measurable visit.

For an ongoing record, AEO Tracker Free checks five ChatGPT questions weekly. Starter adds Google AI Overview, Gemini and Perplexity for $9.99 monthly. We make the app; it records answers and sources, leaves storefront content unchanged and does not track competitors or attribute revenue. It is one way to keep the baseline consistent while you do the store and marketing work.

Frequently asked questions

Can I guarantee that ChatGPT recommends my Shopify store?

No. Relevant, accurate information and repeatable checks give you useful work to do, but the assistant's recommendations depend on the question, sources, market, model and timing. Our observations do not establish a guaranteed ranking method.

Should I focus on my website or Reddit?

Inspect the sources for your actual buying questions first. Our pooled data includes both brand sites and forums, with large differences between assistants. Improve useful store information and participate honestly in relevant communities, rather than treating one channel as a universal formula.

Will adding review stars get my products cited?

Our reported 232-store comparison did not find a statistically clear difference in machine-readable ratings between the cited and uncited groups that had review widgets. It does not support promising AI citations from adding rating labels, and it does not prove reviews have no other value.

How should I measure whether my changes helped?

Save the same buying questions, market, search setting, answers and sources before and after a change. Repeat the checks and keep valid omissions in the record. Separate unusable checks, mentions, citations, recommendations, referral visits and sales.

Does AEO Tracker make ChatGPT recommend my store?

No. It measures chosen buying questions weekly and records answers and sources. You decide what store or marketing work to do. The ongoing Free plan checks five ChatGPT questions, and paid plans add coverage and question slots.

Sources and scope

Evidence: AEO Tracker's anonymized citation report prepared 5 October 2026, 1,443 web-searched usable answers, of which 1,414 cite sources, across nine categories; and its review and crawler surveys on 17 August 2026. The citation summary does not provide a collection-date range, and the snapshot is not presented as a single-day experiment. The surveys are observational and use different samples. Sampled merchant identities, questions, domains and raw store files are not published here. Current guidance checked 5 October: Shopify's GEO playbook, Google AI search guidance and OpenAI crawler guidance. Our plan facts come from the current app plan definitions.
