How to Check if ChatGPT Recommends Your Shopify Store (Free and Paid Ways)
Ask ChatGPT the buying questions your customers ask, with web search enabled. Record whether it names your store, whether it recommends it, and which pages it cites. Repeat the same questions in fresh conversations and over several weeks: one answer cannot tell you how often shoppers will find you.
Start with buying questions, not your brand name
Write five questions about the problem your products solve. For example: 'Which portable monitor stand fits a small desk in the UK?' Include the budget, country or constraint a customer would actually mention. Keep one buying question per check.
'Is my store any good?' is useful for checking claims about your brand. It is a separate test: putting your name in the question makes a mention more likely, so do not mix those results with discovery questions.
This measurement is part of AEO (answer engine optimization), also called GEO (generative engine optimization): understanding whether AI assistants find and recommend your store.
The free manual check
- Open ChatGPT in a private browser window. Start a fresh conversation for each question. A private window separates browser sessions; it does not guarantee an anonymous or identical result.
- If you sign in, use an Unpersonalized temporary chat where available to reduce the effect of saved account preferences. A personalized temporary chat can still use memories.
- Open View all tools and choose Search. Enter your buying question. Check that the answer actually searched, then open its cited links or Sources list.
- Record the full answer, date, country, model if shown, and whether your store was named. Record a recommendation position only if the answer gives an ordered list.
- Record your domain being cited separately from your brand being named. An assistant can recommend you while linking to another website, or cite you without recommending you.
- Repeat in a fresh conversation. Keep the question wording and settings fixed when you repeat the check next week.
If Search is unavailable or the answer reports a failed search, label that row separately. Do not count it as a successful search that failed to find your brand. Check the current ChatGPT search instructions if the menu changes.
A simple record you can copy
| Date and question | Assistant, model and country | Search succeeded? | Named or recommended? | Position and cited URLs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Save the exact wording and date. | Use the same settings for repeats. | Yes, no, or unclear. | Record both separately. | Save the answer and source links. |
For a small set, start with two checks per question, then repeat weekly for three to four weeks. That is a practical starting routine, not a statistically proven sample size. Count only successful web-search answers when describing a search-based mention rate.
Why a single check can mislead
In our 17 August 2026 experiment, repeating the same pinned model changed the brand-present result for one of four discovery questions on ChatGPT, one of four on Gemini and one of four on Perplexity. The experiment covered one brand and only four discovery questions. It shows that repeat checks can disagree; it does not establish a universal disagreement rate.
Look for a pattern over several weeks. Keep model changes and rewritten questions in separate groups, because either can change the answer. A missing mention in one run is a reason to investigate, not proof that your visibility collapsed.
Check Gemini and Perplexity too
Use the same question and country in fresh Gemini and Perplexity conversations. Save the answer and follow its sources. Label the assistant and any search mode you selected so that you compare the same kind of result over time. Do not combine all assistants into a single result that hides which one named you.
When an app is worth paying for
A manual record works for a handful of questions if you will keep it up. An app earns its place when you need scheduled checks, stored answers and a consistent history across engines. Visits to your store are a separate measurement: a mention does not prove a click or sale.
AEO Tracker's ongoing Free plan checks five buying questions weekly on ChatGPT in your home market. Every new install first previews Starter for 14 days. Starter is $9.99 monthly for ten questions on ChatGPT, Google AI Overview, Gemini and Perplexity. Growth is $29.99 for 30 questions on those four engines and extra countries; Pro is $99.99 for 40 questions and adds Claude and Grok.
The chat checks use providers' software connections with live web search enabled. Google AI Overview is read from Google's search results. They sample answers for chosen questions and markets, rather than reproducing every shopper's personal conversation. AEO Tracker does not track competitors or change your storefront.
Compare Shopify AEO tracking apps by schedule, engines and how they count questions before choosing one. You can also read what AI assistants cite when shoppers ask what to buy to decide which sources to investigate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check if ChatGPT recommends my Shopify store for free?
Yes. Ask your buying questions with web search enabled and save the answers and source links. Repeat the same questions in fresh conversations over time. AEO Tracker also has an ongoing Free plan with five weekly ChatGPT questions.
Does a private window remove all personalization?
No. It separates browser sessions, but signing in can reintroduce account settings. An Unpersonalized temporary chat reduces that effect where available. Location, wording, timing and model choice can still change answers.
Is a mention the same as a citation or a sale?
No. A mention names your store, a citation links to a source, and a sale requires a purchase. Record them separately rather than treating one as proof of the others.
How often should I repeat the check?
Keep the wording and settings fixed and look at several weeks of results. Two checks per question followed by weekly repeats is a practical starting routine, not a proven statistical sample size.
Does AEO Tracker check Google AI Overview on Free?
The ongoing Free plan checks ChatGPT only. Starter, Growth and Pro include Google AI Overview. New installs first receive a 14-day Starter preview.
