How to See if Google AI Overview Mentions Your Shopify Products
Search Google for the buying questions your customers ask. When an AI Overview appears, read whether it names your store or products and open the source links. Record searches with no Overview separately: they do not show that an AI answer rejected your store.
A free manual check
- Choose a short list of real buying questions, without putting your brand name in them. For example: 'Which travel coffee grinder is easy to clean in the UK?'
- Search logged out in a private browser window. Keep the country, language and wording consistent between checks. A private window does not remove the location Google can infer.
- Look for the AI Overview separately from ordinary links, advertisements and shopping results. It will not appear for every search.
- If it appears, save the answer, whether your brand or a particular product is named, and the source URLs. A cited page and a recommended product are different observations.
- Repeat on another day with the same settings. Record country or language changes separately, because they can change the result.
Google AI Overview and a chat with Gemini are different surfaces. An answer in Gemini is not evidence that the Overview on a Google search names the same product.
Keep four results separate
| What happened | What to record |
|---|---|
| An Overview names your store or product | Save the exact mention, answer and source URLs. |
| An Overview appears but does not name you | Save the answer and sources as a valid check without a mention. |
| No Overview appears | Record no Overview, rather than counting an absent brand in an answer that does not exist. |
| The search could not be read or completed | Record a failed check separately from either visibility result. |
What Google AI Overview reads in our data
In our 5 October 2026 learning report, 40% of the 245 Google AI Overview answers with sources cited a forum, and 36% cited video. In the 345 ChatGPT answers with sources, the corresponding shares were 15% and 1%.
This is a description of our observed answers, not proof that posting on a forum or publishing a video causes a recommendation. Our questions and product mix shape the sample. Assistants also report sources differently, so cross-engine percentages are not a controlled performance ranking.
For your store, inspect the actual cited pages. A useful product demonstration or an honest answer to a buyer's question may fit the material Google already reads. The data does not justify spam, manufactured reviews or a promise that a particular format will work. Read what AI assistants cite when shoppers ask what to buy for the broader findings and their limits.
What an app checks
AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) both concern getting found in AI answers. A tracker records whether that happens for chosen questions. It does not automatically make a product appear.
AEO Tracker reads Google AI Overview from Google's search results through a service that retrieves the results page. It is a separate engine from Gemini. When no Overview is available, the result is ungrounded and excluded from mention-rate denominators, rather than treated as an answer that failed to mention your store. Failed checks are also excluded.
Starter, Growth and Pro include Google AI Overview, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Starter checks ten buying questions weekly for $9.99 monthly; Growth checks 30 for $29.99 and adds extra-country variants. Pro checks 40 for $99.99 and adds Claude and Grok. The ongoing Free plan checks ChatGPT only. New installs first receive a 14-day Starter preview.
These checks sample a model or search surface at a particular time and market. Your own browser, location and settings can produce a different answer. AEO Tracker does not track competitors or change your storefront.
Other ways to get a first look
Semrush's free AI Overview checker and Ahrefs' free AI Overview tracker provide other starting points. Their own pages describe their current scope. A free domain or brand report is not automatically a recurring test of the exact buying questions you chose.
Compare Shopify AEO tracking apps and ask whether a stated Google engine means Google AI Overview, Google AI Mode or Gemini. Those names do not describe the same measurement.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check Google AI Overview for free?
Yes. Search Google for your buying questions and record the Overview, mentions and sources when it appears. Keep country, language and wording consistent, and repeat over time.
Why doesn't Google show an AI Overview for my question?
Google does not show one for every search. Its absence is different from an Overview that appears but does not name your store. Record those results separately.
Is checking Gemini the same as checking Google AI Overview?
No. Gemini chat and the AI Overview on a Google results page are different surfaces. A mention in one does not establish a mention in the other.
Which AEO Tracker plans include Google AI Overview?
Starter, Growth and Pro include it. The ongoing Free plan checks ChatGPT only; new installs first receive a 14-day Starter preview.
Will a forum post or video make Google recommend my product?
Our citation data does not prove that. It shows which kinds of sources appeared in observed answers. Use your own cited pages to guide useful work, and measure the outcome over time.
